A glass wine room is a refrigeration problem wearing a glass jacket
The appeal is obvious — a wine room is the one storage space in a house that people want to see into, and a glass wall turns racking into the feature of a hallway or dining room. The part that gets underestimated is that a cooled room behind glass behaves like a refrigerator door in a humid climate. Get the glass and the seals right and it disappears into the architecture. Get them wrong and the owner spends a South Florida summer wiping condensation off the outside of a very expensive window.
So the first question is never the glass. It is whether the room is actively cooled, and to what temperature. Everything else follows from that.
Insulated or single pane
- Insulated glass — two panes of tempered glass with a sealed gap between them. The gap keeps the outer surface near room temperature, which is what stops condensation forming on the side you are looking at. This is the specification for any room held meaningfully below ambient, and in this climate that means most cooled cellars.
- Single pane tempered — one panel, clearer and less expensive, with no insulating gap. Right for a display wall or a room kept close to the temperature of the space around it, and wrong for a room that runs cold.
Both are tempered. Neither is a substitute for insulation in the walls and ceiling around them — a glass wall in an otherwise poorly sealed room is not what makes the cooling unit run constantly.
The door is where cold air escapes
A wine room door has a job a shower door does not: it has to seal. Cold air is heavy and finds the bottom edge first, so a door with a decorative gap underneath will bleed cold into the hallway continuously.
- Perimeter seals on the sides and head, so the door closes against something continuous rather than metal onto glass.
- A bottom sweep or threshold, which is the single most important seal in the assembly and the one most often left out.
- Hardware rated for the weight. A full-height insulated glass door is heavy, and hinges that are adequate for a shower door are not necessarily adequate here.
- A latch or closer, so the door is actually shut rather than resting against the frame.
Finishes
Hardware comes in the same finishes as the rest of our glass work — polished chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, brushed and satin brass among them. The glass itself can be clear, low-iron for a cleaner edge colour, or carry etched or frosted detail specified before fabrication.
How the job runs
- Talk before the framing is closed. The rough opening for a glass wall wants to be square and plumb, and it is far cheaper to correct that while it is still studs than to fabricate glass around a problem.
- Measure the finished opening. Final measurements are taken once the surrounding finishes are on, exactly as with a shower enclosure, because tempered glass cannot be trimmed on site.
- Fabricate. Panels are cut, edges worked, any hardware holes drilled, and then the glass is tempered or the insulated unit is sealed.
- Install and seal. Panels set, door hung and adjusted, seals fitted and checked so the door closes against a continuous line.
What it costs
Wine cellar glass is priced on the area of glass, whether it is insulated or single pane, the door hardware and seals, and how much of the opening is fixed panel versus operable door. An insulated glass wall with a sealed frameless door is materially more expensive than a single-pane display wall of the same size.

Common questions
Does a glass wine room need insulated glass?
It depends on how cold the room is held and how humid the room outside it is, which in South Florida is the whole question. A cooled wine room behind a single pane of glass will condense on the warm side in summer, and you will be wiping the outside of that glass most of the year. Insulated glass — two panes with a sealed air or argon gap — keeps the outer surface much closer to room temperature and largely stops that. Single pane is cheaper and works for a room held near ambient, such as display racking that is not actively cooled.
Can the door be frameless?
A frameless glass door looks best and is what most people picture, but the seal is the trade-off. A cooled cellar needs the door to close against something continuous — a gasket or sweep on the sides, top and bottom — or the cold air runs out at the edges and the cooling unit works permanently. Frameless doors can be sealed well, but the hardware has to be chosen for it from the start rather than added afterwards.
Will the glass be tempered?
Yes. A full-height glass wall or door in a living space is tempered safety glass, heat-treated so that if it breaks it falls into small blunt pieces rather than shards. As with a shower enclosure, tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or trimmed after treatment, so every panel is fabricated to measurements taken in the finished opening.
Can you put our name or a design on the glass?
Etched and frosted detail is possible on wine room glass and is a common request for a family name, a crest or a band of privacy frosting at eye level. It is specified before the glass is fabricated, not applied afterwards.
Do you build the cellar itself?
No. We supply and install the glass — the walls, the door and the hardware. The framing, the cooling unit, the racking and the insulation behind the walls are the builder’s and the refrigeration contractor’s work. We are used to coordinating with both, and the glass is normally one of the last things to go in.
