Semi-frameless shower doors in West Palm Beach
An unframed glass door beside a fixed panel held in a slim metal channel. It keeps most of the open look of frameless glass, tolerates imperfect walls better, and costs less.
What semi-frameless means
The name describes where the metal is. The door is a panel of tempered glass hung on hinges with no frame around it, exactly as on a frameless enclosure. The fixed glass beside it sits in a slim channel fixed to the wall and the curb, and some layouts add a header bar across the top that ties the panels together.
That small amount of framing changes the engineering. The channel supports the fixed glass along its edge, so the glass does not have to be rigid on its own — which means thinner glass, lighter hardware and a lower price, while the part you see and touch every day, the door, still looks frameless.
| Type | Glass | Metal around the glass | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frameless | 3/8" or 1/2" tempered | Hinges and clamps only | The most open look, on walls in reasonable condition |
| Semi-frameless | 3/16" to 3/8" tempered | Channel on the fixed panel, none on the door | Much of the frameless look at lower cost, or walls that need a channel |
| Framed | 3/16" to 1/4" tempered | Finished frame on all sides | Tub enclosures and the most economical way to enclose a shower |
When semi-frameless is the right call
- The budget will not stretch to frameless, but you do not want a door framed on all four sides.
- The walls run out of plumb. A channel absorbs variation that frameless glass would have to be cut to match, and tempered glass cannot be trimmed once it is made.
- The wall behind the tile is not ideal for heavy glass. Thinner panels and a channel put less load on fixings than a large frameless panel held only by clamps.
- A replacement for an old framed door, where you want a cleaner look but the opening was built around a frame.
If the walls are sound and the look matters most, a frameless enclosure is still the cleaner result. If economy matters most, a framed door is cheaper again. Semi-frameless is the middle of that range, and for a lot of bathrooms it is the honest answer.
Glass and hardware options
The choices are the same ones you would make for frameless glass: clear or low-iron glass, rain or frosted patterns for privacy, and a hardware finish matched to the fixtures already in the room. The channel comes in the same finish as the hinges and handle, so polished chrome, brushed nickel and matte black all read as one set. We bring samples to the measure.
What moves the price
- The size of the opening and the number of panels
- Glass thickness, and clear against low-iron or patterned glass
- Hardware finish
- Whether a header bar is needed to tie the panels together
- Removing and disposing of an existing enclosure
We price from the measure, after we have seen the walls, because the walls decide as much of the job as the glass does.
Common questions
What is the difference between semi-frameless and frameless?
On a frameless enclosure the only metal is the hinges, clamps and handle. A semi-frameless enclosure adds a slim metal channel or partial frame, usually around the fixed panel and sometimes as a header across the top, while the door itself stays unframed. The channel carries some of the load, which is what allows thinner glass and a lower price.
Is semi-frameless cheaper than frameless?
Usually, yes. Thinner glass costs less to fabricate and the framing makes the installation more tolerant of imperfect walls. How much less depends on the size of the opening, the glass and the hardware finish, which is why we price from the measure rather than from a catalogue.
Will a semi-frameless door leak more than a frameless one?
No — if anything the opposite. The channel on the fixed panel closes the gap a frameless panel leaves at the wall, and the door carries the same sweeps and seals either way. Water management at the door depends more on the floor slope and the position of the shower head than on how much metal there is.
Can semi-frameless work on walls that are out of plumb?
It is often the better answer when they are. A wall channel can absorb a variation that frameless glass, with no frame to hide it, would have to be scribed to match. We measure how far the walls run out at several heights and tell you which approach the opening calls for.
